Techniguard Vacuum Jacketed Piping (VJP)

High-Efficiency, Configurable Vacuum Insulated Pipe

Techniguard vacuum jacketed pipe is a low heat leak, high performance vacuum insulated pipe designed to transfer cryogenic liquids. Our vacuum jacketed insulated piping systems are manufactured in easy-to-assemble sections with high-efficiency, low heat leak bayonet connections.

  • Delivers significant lifetime savings due to minimal cryogen loss.
  • Require no maintenance or continuous pumping unlike dynamic vacuum jacketed pipe systems.
  • Provides longer, care-free service life, backed by our best-in-the-business warranty.
  • Easily accommodates future expansions or modifications.
  • Provides a rapid return on your investment.

We offer two models, the R-Series (rigid) vacuum jacketed pipe and the B-Series (bendable) vacuum jacketed pipe.

The high thermal performance of Techniguard R-Series rigid vacuum insulated pipe saves our customers enough liquid nitrogen so that the system pays for itself in less than a year in most cases. And rigid pipe is maintenance free for a minimum of ten years!

Techniguard B-Series bendable vacuum jacketed pipe has only a modest loss in performance versus rigid, but allows a more flexible system layout, may simplify the installation, allows component reuse, and can lower shipping costs.

Cryogenic liquids are used in a wide variety of applications from biotechnology to theater, but some of the more common applications for VJP include:

Food and Beverage

Food chilling, food freezing, and even inerting bottles, containers, and bags before filling. Anywhere that cryogenic liquids are used in processing, vacuum jacketed pipe insures the highest quality liquid gets from the bulk tank to the use point with minimal liquid loss.

Laboratory, Medical, Pharmaceutical, and Biotechnology

Techniguard vacuum insulated pipe is used to transfer and deliver many different cryogenic liquids from storage vessels to the point of use without the unsightly sweating and dripping that other solutions may have.

Aerospace and Industrial

Our vacuum jacketed systems are used in space and aeronautics research applications.

Electronic and Semiconductor

Many manufactures use our products to deliver cryogenic liquids from the supply to the use point in their manufacturing processes.

Vacuum jacketed pipe offers a superior solution where a long exterior pipe run is exposed to weather, in processing facilities for example.

Techniguard B-Series vacuum jacketed pipe may be more suitable in some situations:
  • Start-up operations where something is needed quickly, may be changed, or is a temporary situation.
  • Operations where substantial plant growth is anticipated.
  • Laboratories where future rerouting of cryogenic pipe system may be necessary.
By its flexible nature, bendable vacuum insulated pipe may be used in a variety of applications not possible for rigid pipe.
VJP is essentially two pipes, one within the other. The cryogenic liquid flows through the inner pipe. The outer pipe serves as a vacuum jacket which houses the inner line, the vacuum space, a molecular sieve, getters, and the super-insulation. Our vacuum insulated pipe has extremely low heat leak, minimizing cryogen loss from boil-off.

Both our R-Series rigid and B-Series bendable vacuum jacketed pipe are constructed of 304 stainless steel pipe or tubing.

  • The inner pipe is suspended within the outer pipe by low thermal conductivity radial supports. Low thermal conductivity radial supports inside the pipe reduce the heat transferred to the cryogenic liquid.
  • Technifab also utilizes a vacuum and multi-layer super insulation to reduce heat radiation and convection, creating the lowest heat transfer rate of any existing cryogenic piping system.
  • A combination of a special molecular sieve and chemical getters remove any residual molecules and impurities from material outgassing.
Cross-section of VJP

Techniguard construction means the heat loss may be reduced by over 400 times when compared with bare copper pipe. Techniguard VJP is superior to traditional foam insulated pipe; the heat loss for foam insulated pipe can be 40 times greater than Techniguard!

R-series vacuum jacketed pipe offers our best heat leak and performance, with superior durability. Expansion joints are located on the inner pipe to allow for contractions caused by cryogenic temperatures. Our rigid pipe will be maintenance-free for a minimum of ten years. And the bayonets allow easy connection to our Techniguard B-Series vacuum jacketed pipe.

Sections of Techniguard Bendable Pipe are connected via vacuum insulated bayonet connectors. These connections provide a frost-free joint between cryogenic lines. Bayonet connections simplify installation by eliminating the need for threaded or welded field joints and the associated foam insulation or wrapping.

Technifab’s B-Series bendable vacuum jacketed pipe is constructed of stainless steel convoluted inner and outer tubing. We offer a choice of three different coverings: stainless steel armor, heat shrink, or stainless steel braid to protect the outer convoluted tubing from abrasion. Our bendable pipe construction gives the product a maintenance-free design for a minimum 3 years. The B-Series vacuum insulated pipe uses the same bayonets as our rigid (R-Series) vacuum insulated pipe, allowing easy interconnection in cryogenic transfer systems.

Techniguard B-Series has additional features with only a modest loss in performance versus our R-Series VJP:

  • Simplifies system layout requirements - Flexibility reduces the necessity for precise system layout measurements.
  • Easy Installation - No welding or refitting in the field required. It's even easier to install than foam covered pipe!
  • Reroute/reuse system - Flexibility allows much or all of a system to be reused if use-point locations are changed, i.e. plant layout is changed. You can also add to the existing system without major rework expenses.
  • Lower shipping costs - Flexibility allows cryogenic pipe systems to be coiled and crated for shipment via motor or air freight. The need for expensive dedicated trucks is eliminated. Overseas shipment is no longer cost prohibitive.

Technifab has extensive experience in manufacturing vacuum jacketed pipe, both rigid and bendable. We were the first to introduce modular vacuum jacketed piping, keeping prefabricated sections of Techniguard VJP, modular valves, gas vents, and gas traps in stock to quickly deliver systems or replacements when you need them. We also custom design and manufacture a cryogenic pipe systems to your exact requirements.

We offer the best warranty in the business – 10 years warranty on all rigid vacuum jacketed pipe and 3 years on bendable.

When you price vacuum insulated piping systems, the initial cost of a cryogenic transfer system does not represent the total operating cost. The savings on liquid nitrogen due to drastically reduced heat leak gives you a quick return on the initial investment. Learn how Techniguard Vacuum Jacketed Pipe (VJP) can improve your operation's efficiency and profitability.

How to choose:
Flexibility and cost savings are the factors in considering the use of a Techniguard B-Series vacuum jacketed pipe over traditional rigid pipe in a vacuum insulated system. When a low cost rapid installation is of primary concern, bendable pipe is a good alternative to rigid vacuum insulated pipe. Techniguard B-Series bendable pipe's advantages over more traditional rigid Vacuum Jacketed Pipe (VJP) translate into cost savings to the customer along with improved system options for growing plant operations.

You can learn more about the trade-offs between rigid and bendable pipe in the article from the Summer 2006 issue of Cold Facts on Flexible Transfer Hoses for Cryogenic Fluids.
